On behalf of all Richmond Primary School staff, students and families I would like to offer you and your family a warm welcome to our dynamic learning community. Richmond Primary School is a public school located in Richmond, Tasmania and was established in 1834 for students from the Richmond area and outlining areas. In fact our school is the oldest public school still operating out of its original school house in Australia.
Richmond Primary provides a safe, caring environment where students feel a sense of belonging and where positive relationships are nurtured and valued. Through a supportive and respectful community our children achieve their full social, emotional and academic potential.
The school has a proud tradition of academic, cultural and sporting excellence. We aim to develop and maintain the highest possible standards in student learning. At the same time, however, we acknowledge that our students bring with them many talents besides their academic capacity and recognise that they often have immense energy, enthusiasm and initiative. We provide opportunities for them to participate in a range of sporting and co-curricular pursuits and encourage them to join in community activities beyond the school.
The school’s motto is ‘Bridge to the Future’. It recognises the history of over 180 years of education on this site and responding to students in the 21st Century. The mix of old and new respects our journey and looks to the future. The school’s ethos promotes self-motivation, responsibility for one’s own direction and constant striving for self-improvement. The happiest and most successful students are those who “have a go”, are excited about learning and are proud of doing the best they can.
The school is well equipped with facilities including a hall/gymnasium, music and art facilities, basketball/volley ball and netball courts, library, Literacy and Numeracy support rooms, kiln, canteen and uniform outlet.
The school has 35 staff including Classroom Teachers, Sports Teacher, Music Teachers and counsellors, Speech and Language Pathologist and Teacher Assistants. The school is supported by school administrative and support staff, grounds persons and cleaners.
The learning program at Richmond Primary School is a diverse one. The academic achievements are a credit to the staff and to the students themselves. High achievement is encouraged at the school and children are given the opportunity to be involved in exams and competitions in mathematics and language.
The co-curricular program is one we are proud of with an extensive creative arts program, choir, Leadership programs, chess, Dance and Sports Leaders Program.
The school offers programs for children from Birth to 4 years through Launching into Learning. These programs are part of our Early Childhood Program and include Pre-Kinder, Mini Musicians, Littlies in the Library and Movement and Music. The early years are a critical time for a child’s development and cement in place lifelong learning habits. Parents of 0 – 4 aged students also have the opportunity to connect with the school community. Such connections enhance the successful transition to formal schooling. We also offer After School Care for all students 5 to 12.
The school enjoys a strong network of support from parents and the community with involvement from the School Association, Fundraising Group, Environmental Group and working bees. The school community and the wider community support our continued work developing our school grounds.
The school environment includes a number of historic buildings, more recent additions include a large hall/gym, canteen, sport store, two new classrooms and upgraded and improved classroom facilities.
I strongly encourage all parents to meet with me as appropriate to discuss concerns, ideas, questions and feedback in order to ensure all individuals connected with the school feel valued and supported. Developing a strong partnership in this way will assist in building a strong and progressive school together.
We are very proud of our school and look forward to sharing opportunities and friendship with your family. I hope you and your family experience a long and happy association with Richmond Primary with your child maximising their full potential.
